Welcome by Dr. Larry Devane, President of

Opening
Keynote Address: From
data to decisions: How can IR help with assessment and retention?
Scott Bodfish, Vice President for Market Research, Noel-Levitz
Most campuses have
assessment and retention initiatives and more often than not
institutional researchers are asked to play a role. In my experience,
the retention and assessment committees assume that IR has a secret
store of data that is just waiting to be tapped into. But rarely is that
the case. We do have lots of data but our colleagues want information
to help make decisions. Through a series of case studies, Scott
will illustrate a process for working effectively with campus assessment
and retention initiatives.
Biography
Scott Bodfish is Vice President of market research at
Noel-Levitz. He has over 14 years of experience as a strategic
planner and institutional researcher. He is currently responsible
for maintaining and improving the effectiveness of Noel-Levitz research
services and identifying additional data sources to enhance and
customize institutional research approaches. Scott has thorough
knowledge of several areas within enrollment management and retention
research, including policy formation, predictive modeling of inquiries,
applicants, and matriculants, financial aid modeling, and student
success and retention. Prior to joining Noel-Levitz, Scott served
as Director of Institutional Research and Planning Support at Wilkes
University (MO) and Sweet Briar College (VA). Scott holds an M.A.
from Washington University (MO).

“Disaster
Planning and Recovery”
Dr. Martin Crossland, Dean of the School of
Lifelong Education, Oral Roberts University
Planning a disaster recovery strategy is crucial to mission-critical systems
in the event that your
hardware and/or software is vulnerable to unforeseen events such as such
as a tornado,
earthquake, fire, and/or computer
viruses causing a major disruption and downtime to business.
This session will cover data backup, recovery, and data management tips to improve
disaster planning
strategies on your campus. Target
audience: Academic, Administration,
or other offices seeking to improve data backup and recovery strategies.
“Why
Lean?”
Karen Kusler, Assistant Director of Process Improvement, University of Central
Oklahoma
Frustrations
in the workplace, response delays for data, incomplete information
submitted are a few
examples of how Lean Principles can help your campus
fix these symptoms of problems. Using Lean tools digs deeper in a
process to identify the real issue and helps employees to think
“outside of the education box” for solutions. In
addition, the solutions are identified and implemented in as short as a
few days. More complicated processes my take a few months, but
that is still quicker than the typical one or two years implementation
in higher education. Learning how to “try-storm” and make
change will improve every higher education institution’s image for
responsiveness.
Karen is currently a certified Lean Manager for Administrative and
Service Processes.
Target audience:
Any Institutional Research, Institutional Effectiveness,
or Assessment office seeking information on campus-wide process
improvement strategies.

“The
New and Improved FERPA”
Troy
Milligan, Director of Institutional Research,
Redlands
Community College
A
revision and re-authorization of the Higher Education Act in 2008
led to revisions of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
(FERPA) that were released in January 2009.
This session will discuss how these revisions may affect
how you release, or don’t release, information about students. Target audience:
any Institutional Research, Student Service, Academic
Affairs, or other campus offices that deal directly with student
information and the release of that information to the student or
other parties.
“University-wide Assessment Using
ePortfolio”
Dr. Gweth
Holzmann, Curriculum Coordinator, Oral
Roberts University
Jana Swartwood, Curriculum Development Coordinator,
Oral
Roberts
University
Erin Cox, Research Analyst,
Oral
Roberts
University
Oral
Roberts
University
representatives will demonstrate how data is viewed and gathered by
students, faculty, and institutional researchers from the
ePortfolio tool. This
university-wide assessment tool links the university’s purpose
with learning outcomes to evaluate the curriculum and pedagogy
practices and improve student learning and assessment outcomes.
This assessment system earned ORU the Council for Higher
Education Accreditation (CHEA) award, which is the highest award
possible for an assessment program in Higher Education!
Target audience:
any Institutional research, Institutional Effectiveness, or
Assessment office seeking to improve their assessment practices.
